Home Monitoring Mockup

Home Monitoring

Home Monitoring is apple watch app that is designed to be a simple, clean, user-friendly experience. The app has easy access to turn on and off lights, security cameras access, current statues of water, electricity and indoor temperature. The goal was to make a simple home monitoring that was easy to understand and use for anyone especially for people who are 60 years old and up.

Research

When beginning the research, I thought a good way to find great feedback when people use a Home Monitoring app was read reviews of other Home Monitoring apps, mainly the ones that are designed for an apple watch and going through comments users have posted on what they liked and what they wish the app had to make the experience better. So, I decided to pick Smart Life Smart Living and Apple Home for the research.

No longer seems to work

Michele875

The app no longer is connecting. I’ve tried to delete and reinstall, reconnect, relaunch... you name it, I tried it. My last resort was to share this review. It worked great when I first installed it. Completely disappointed I can’t get it to work anymore.

Confusing and difficult

Weiber

I cannot connect my lightbulbs via wifi or Bluetooth? There are two many software requirements.

App

It’s a good app but sometimes when you go to use the app it won’t let you turn your light on but when it does work it’s works good.

Suddenly the app stopped working!!!

_AshRay_

Network connection failed I have tried every solution nothing worked. The app was great it doing has job but now useless. hope this get fixed fast.

  • Apple Home reviews

Gee. This this is stupid.

Hot_II

Use this just to turn off the lights? Nah. It’s weird.

New update not so good!

SFO2HNL

Annoying when you now have to click twice to activate anything.

Three taps

matteo--2018

Who came up with the idea of tapping three times instead of one to turn a light switch on? This is the most absurd idea a human could ever have! Hate it

Change it back!

Hobblie

I use to be able to turn lights on and off with a single tap- now you have to tap the icon and slide the switch. So dumb. I also hate the new layout. It used to be simple and clean.

User Research

To gather user research, I created a survey with 8 questions to ask 6 people around the age of 60 and up what their experience was like using a home monitor or something similar.

Questions Asked

  • Why do you use a home monitor?
  • Which one do you use?
  • Which brand of security cameras do you use?
  • How often do you used it?
  • Who do you share the account with?
  • What frustrations do you experience?
  • What is your experience like with sharing an account?
  • What your favorite thing about the experience?

Answers Gathered

Here were the most common answers I noticed after gathering the interviews together.

  • Making sure home is secured
  • Often used every day especially at night
  • Having a quick easy way to access all home security cameras
  • Account shared with spouse or another family member

Final Product

While designing the finale product I thought just leaving it on dark mode was the best choice when selecting a color palette. Since not only does it use less energy from the watch, but it's also less restraint on the eyes especially for the night when checking to see security cameras or if the owner happens to arrive home late or wakes up very early and wants to use the app.

User Testing

Once the design and prototyping was completed, I got those same 5 individuals to test out the product to see how the experience would go for them and asking questions on how they felt using the product some of the tasks being going to cameras, select which camera you want to see, go back, go to lights, turn onone of the lights from any switch and go back, go to users and go back.

Conclusion

The test was a success and here are the results of answers I got when asking them about the experience which I'm very pleased with and glad the experience was a understable and comfortable when using.

  • Yes, it was easy to use and understand
  • I liked how the icons were labeled
  • I like how you can easily access which users are connected
  • I really liked the camera feature
